Merits and Demerits of ecology & green technology

Posted on: May 22nd, 2013 by admin

Green technology comprises of a number of alternative energy systems including solar, wind and low impact heating systems like passive solar, geothermal and several other techniques used to create power without hampering the nature. Considering the global concern for environment damages caused due to greenhouse gases, more and more people seems to have become conscious and are adopting green lifestyle. Global warming is considered as one of the major implications of these greenhouse gases and pollution created by industries and industrial waste. Luckily with the availability of green technology and other non polluting forms of power generation (falling under green technology), the mankind can get rid of the danger lurking through this problem. But relying over the ecology and green technology has its own benefits and drawbacks. When you get rid of the pollution and save the environment from getting damaged, you could face a couple of issues in the form of drawbacks by using green technology. So let’s check out some of the merits and demerits of ecology and green technology as under:

The Merits

You can secure the environment

The basic advantage you enjoy while relying over ecological approach and green technology is that you could safeguard the environment from getting damaged. This technology employs fewer resources hence it has lesser impact over the environment and earth. This also means that by using green technology, you get a small amount of waste, which means you can reduce the negative effects over environment to a great extent by going green. Using solar energy to run a number of home and commercial appliances can consume less electricity generated by conventional methods, which also means that you can secure your resources to a great extent.

You gain financial benefits

Though building up the green technology could be at times be an expensive affair, however, most of the time it remains inexpensive as compared to the conventional options. Mostly, the operating cost is usually low, which means you save can money by relying over the ecological approach of generating power as compared to the conventional means. And when you cost less in terms of infrastructure, you also end up paying less for the maintenance even for the more costly green technology based machines. Hence you could see your accumulated energy savings simply surpassing the added building costs.

You reap health benefits

Generally when ecological approach using green technology is used, the material used in erecting the mechanism is often human or nature friendly. This means it will carry less amount of implication over the human health. Generally the building material used in green technology include formaldehyde infused MDF foam and carpeting ceiling panels along with few types of fluorescent lighting, which are all organic in nature having no impact over human body or their health.

The Demerits

Inconsistency in power generation

Though by adopting ecological approach can yield you a number of benefits, yet it can also have several downsides. You could certainly use green technology to produce electricity or use it for other purposes, however, how much can you generate the power is simply not consistent. The reasons are quite inevitable; no one has the control over the weather conditions. Hence if at any specific area, which seems to be relying over the solar energy has a cloudy day or simply receives rain during the whole day and for several weeks, it will simply fail to generate the energy to produce electricity or carry other things there.

Too space consuming projects

In order to build up the green technology based infrastructure, you simply need good amount of land space. This simply means that you need to cut the farmland just to erect a number of wind mill turbines to produce the power via ecological approach. Hence this means, it cannot be benefitted over the congested areas also, installing them in the farmland could be damaging the area along with occupying loads of land, which may not be a feasible thing for many. So, you have another downside of relying over the green technology.

Could be availed only for limited areas

The other big demerit of relying over the green technology based powerhouses is that you cannot build up these systems everywhere due to a number of reasons. These systems may certainly fail to work in specific areas. For example, if you want to use wave energy to produce energy, this could be used only when you see the waves reaching to the level of 16 feet. You can only use the geothermal plants effectively only over the geological unstable parts of the earth and not everywhere.

Final word

Green technology is a new talk of the town, with more and more nations are seen experimenting over it to develop as their alternate power source. This is only in the context of saving the environment; however, it has both merits and demerits, which are supposed to be checked before implementing the same.

Top Internet Security Threats That Never Seem to Go Away

Posted on: May 13th, 2013 by admin

With shopping, payment and banking now possible through the internet, it is important to get internet security to protect your personal information. Today, many leading companies are offering internet security software to their clients. You can choose any of these programs to safeguard your system. However, before doing so, you need to be aware of the various internet security threats. Here is a list of the top internet security threats that are not so easy to avoid.

Phishing

Phishing is a specific form of cyber threat. It is one of the serious threats users come across while accessing Internet services such as email. Here the criminal creates an exact replica of a credible institution or company’s website, then attempts to trick you to get your personal information- username, password, PIN etc. For example, you may be sent an email that pretends to be from your bank, requesting your personal details. In general, these emails also inform you that the bank has modified its IT infrastructure and requests all customers to re-confirm their personal information. So when you click on the link in the email, you are taken to the fake website, where you are convinced to reveal your details.

The piggybacking Legitimate sites

These websites have been functioning for over a long time. Today, almost all sites depend on third party advertisers to make profit. The cyber criminals use this opportunity to leverage the third party advertisers and start displaying malicious ads for their own vested interests. Though these criminals change their deployment methods, they seek modern ways to piggyback legitimate sites to spread the menace.

The Java Exploits

These have continued to plague the internet security world for a long time. Almost all computing devices across the globe have Java installed in them. Sadly, this has created a problem for a large number of people. Whenever new updates are available, the cyber criminals immediately come out with new vulnerability in the updates. So, if your devices are installed with Java, make sure to completely update it before using it. The internet security threats associated with Java exploits include viruses, spywares and malware.

Malware

Malware means malicious code that sets on your devices without you ever knowing how it was found on your device or where it came from. This code simply slows down the system’s performance by informing other websites of what you are doing, such as your most visited sites, or it may show unending pop-up ads. In general, Malware is used to steal your personal details. Today, cyber crooks design malwares as soon as new operating system or device is introduced into the market.

Denial-of-service Attacks

DoS attacks are among the most dangerous serious Internet threats. Remote computers will manage other computers on the internet through viruses or malware. The attack forces a machine or network to shut down making it inaccessible to its intended users. In such cases users are deprived of the service or resource they are intended to use. Victims of DoS attacks are the web servers of high-profile organizations such as banking and government organizations.
