While Nokia is agog with chipmaker Qualcomm on a cross-licensing agreement, a New Zealand-based company Michael S Sutton Ltd. has filed a complaint against Nokia claiming the world’s largest mobile phone maker is infringing its data packaging technology patent. Michael S Sutton has registered the suit in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas this week. The lawsuit says that Nokia is using Sutton’s data packaging technology for its messaging applications. The company is also seeking damages from Nokia for the patent infringement. Nokia has strongly reacted the lawsuit claming, This case was previously filed against Nokia and then voluntarily dismissed by the plaintiff. Rcomm offers colored mobile phones for Rs 777

India’s second largest private telephony major Reliance Communications (Rcomm) has made the cheapest phone for Indians. Rcomm has launched the SIM based Classic 202 at Rs 77 (US$19), which is almost half of the existing colour handset prices of Rs 1,600. The company has launched ‘Classic 202′ along with ‘Classic 204′ and `Classic 203′, which are available at Rs 844 and Rs 888, respectively. The ‘Classic 202′ is featured with FM radio, ployphonic ringtones and address book. Rcomm has launched new SIM based CDMA handsets, which allows users to change to other providers, if they are not satisfied with the Reliance Communications’ services. Currently, the entry level black and white handsets are available at around Rs 1000 and color handsets at Rs 1400-1800 from Tata Indicom, the other significant CDMA mobile service provider. According to Reliance Communications President (wireless) S P Shukla, Rcomm is bringing mobile phones for an entirely new segment of population in metroes, small cities and rural hinterland of India. Nokia has launched these mobile phones to introduce low-cost mobile telephony service to India’s rural masses. The company has launched Nokia 1200, 1208, 1650, 2660, 2630, 2760 and Nokia 2505 in the market. Both of these phones have the first call-time tracking application and multi-phonebooks to make phone sharing simpler and more efficient. The call-tracking feature allows users and village phone entrepreneurs to pre-set a time or cost limit on individual calls and automatically ending the call after the limit has been reached. Shape enables Skype to reach most mobile phones
Soon mobile phone users would be able to receive all functions of IM+ on their mobile phones. Germany based company, Shape Services announced that soon company will release its IM+ version for Skype software, so that IM+ version will run on most of mobile phones. The company is planning to release its latest version of IM+ for Windows Mobile Pocket PC, Windows Mobile Smartphone, Palm OS, Symbian OS and J2ME devices. A WAP based IM+ version will support Skype access from low-end devices. Currently IM+ for Skype Software is available only in BlackBerry, which supports voice and text communication with other Skype users. Even IM+ version also allows users to make Skype calls to landline or mobile phones through SkypeOut. Users do need a PC running PC for this service, only their BlackBerry device with Skype account and SkypeOut call credits. The IM+ Mobile Instant Messenger supports a wide range of public and corporate IM systems like MSN/Live Messenger, AIM/iChat, Yahoo!, Jabber, ICQ, Google Talk, MySpace, Skype, Microsoft LCS, Lotus Sametime, Reuters Messaging and Oracle IM. Sun brings Java/Linux to mobile phones
Sun Microsystems is planning to sell ‘pre-integrated’, GPL-licensable, Linux and Java based operating system software reference design for mobile phones. The company is planning to sell version of Java based mobile phones, named “JavaFX Mobile” which will bring network access to the world’s computers. Like most Java enabled phones, JavaFX Mobile will also use Java for almost everything, whereas the Linux component will consist only of a kernal and low-level services and libraries. JavaFX Mobile uses Java from the UI toolkit to telephony and security middleware to user applications like browser and media players. After the acquisition of SavaJe by Sun, SavaJe will develop the Java applications for JavaFX Mobile phone. Company’s pure-Java mobile phone operating system stack would be integrated into JavaFX Mobile. JavaFX Mobile would be available through OEM license to carriers and electronics manufacturers. The JavaFX software can also run the host of Java applications, which have been written for the predominating incarnation of Java for mobile phones, named Mobile Internet Device Platform (MIDP). MIDP is based on the more compact Java Micro Edition (ME). The company has also launched JavaFX Script, a scripting language to simplify the process of creating and distributing interactive content, which spans all Java technology enabled platforms like mobile phones, set tops, and laptops. Japan based company, Anritsu Corp has developed software, named MX882000C-012HSDPA H-Set6, to evaluate 3.5G HSPA mobile phones. The MX882000C-012HSDPA H-Set6 tests HSDPA mobile phones with communications speeds of 7.2Mbps. The company has also launched the MX882000C-021 HSUPA measurement software, which supports call processing and RF Tx parametric testing of HSUPA mobile phones. After the installation of the MX882000C-012 and MX882000C-021 in the MT8820B/MT8815B radio communication analyzer, the W-CDMA/HSDPA measurement setup supports quick and accurate call processing tests, RF Tx/Rx parametric tests, and throughput tests of 3.5G HSPA (HSDPA/HSUPA) mobile phones with communications speeds of 7.2Mbps. Palm intros Treo 755p for Sprint network
Palm recently announced the release of its ever-slowly-improving lineup of smart devices, but this time expandin on the 700 series with the Palm Treo 755p sprinting on the Sprint network. The Treo 755p is the first Treo, which is built-in with the Microsoft Direct Push technology for email and Google Maps for mobile devices. The Google Maps support not just allows you to see maps and satellite photos, but also find directions, make out listings local to your area and even receive real-time traffic updates. It’s a CDMA device and sadly WiFi support is even now a wanting nice-to-have that is always looked for by us in a smartphone. The device does though include support for EvDO (Rev.0), mini-SD card slot giving support to almost 4GB cards, a 1.3 megapixel camera that captures stills and video, SMS backing for Yahoo, AOL and Gmail, and the capability of watching mobile video with Sprint TV. Microsoft debuts ‘Unified Communications’ strategy for mobile phones
Microsoft is pushing its strategy of Unified Communications into mobile phones. Software giant, Microsoft has launched a qualification program for mobile phones, which would be compatible with its unified communications devices. Microsoft is rolling out various communication devices to tie together various enterprise messaging platforms, including the public beta of Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Communicator 2007. The company will show 15 new generation of mobile phones and other devices, which will connect e-mail, instant messaging, real time presence information, VoIP and mobile platforms at the Microsoft Hardware Engineering Conference in Los Angeles. The mobile handset manufactures, including LG-Nortel, NEC, Plantronics, Polycom, Samsung, ASUSTek Computer, GN, Tatung, and ViTELiX have been working on design, so that their hardware would be compatible with the public beta program of Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Communicator 2007. According to Microsoft’s official report, its communication strategy uses an open approach with published software and devices would be able to provide plug-and-plug experience out of the box, a “Just Works” experience. Mobile handsets must include audio support and comply a wide range of VoIP codes also include specific user interface elements in order to qualify for the certification. Strix deploys citywide municipal wireless network in Greece
Galatsi, is the first city to deploy the first wireless mesh network in Greece. Calabasas based Strix Systems announced that the municipality of Galatsi is using Strix’s Access/One Outdoor Wireless System (OWS) to provide free based broadband services to residents and businesses, free Internet access to students, and free Internet access and VoIP service for municipal employees. A wireless networking company based in Galatsi, BGM Ltd., has tested and deployed the Strix system, which covers an area of 4 sq. km in the city centre. The company’s primary high-speed connection enables high throughput in all nodes in the network. Strix Systems has mounted the OWS 3600 Series nodes, as the central nodes for the network while the OWS 2400 nodes are mounted on buildings around the municipality. The Strix OWS 2400 Series and OWS 3600 Series are well suited to provide coverage over long distances and around buildings, hills, valleys and forested areas. BGM has implemented the first phase of a test network, which provides free Internet access to all citizens in the coverage area. Now the company is planning to deploy the second phase of the network and expand the coverage area needed for Galatsi’s public places, including the Olympic athletic centre. Municipal employees would be able to easily access data from their laptops. Municipal police can use VoIP and video over the network to connect to the central office. The Strix network will also provide Galatsi with an independent network for emergency communications.
