It’s a blend of mobile technology with social networking. Using SMS protocol, 80180 Media wants to push forward its local-event-related content service to the text-messaging crowd.
A GigaOm post reveals that the Boston-based company has come forward to set up 70 different SMS channels in 15 American cites to send updates on events and local insider news on various issues including, sports, music, fashion, kids etc.
For this innovative news service, which is largely based on citizen journalism, the company will hire correspondents assign them urban areas. The correspondents will cover and write text for SMS to run the network.
As of now, the 80180 messages will not carry any advertising. The company is also providing the SMS service for free. The users just need to register their mobile number at the company’s website.
