US largest telecommunications group, AT&T has introduced its first Wi-Fi broadband Internet services, named Muni Wi-Fi, a citywide wireless service across a 3-square-mile portion of Riverside, which includes downtown Riverside, Hunter Technology Park and the Adams Auto Center. The company has partnered with a leading provider of free wireless Internet access, MetroFi, to build the Reverside Network, which uses Wi-Fi mesh technology deployed on city-owned poer poles and other departments. The mesh, wireless broadband Internet access network in Riverside, which includes both a consumer and business solution and municipal public safety network that can be used by citywide agencies. , AT&T Metro Wi-Fi in Riverside would be the nation’s largest Wi-Fi deployment for both municipal and public use. Additionally, the Riverside city is testing the service to run the video to and from police department patrol cars. AT&T Muni Wi-Fi includes traffic monitoring and coordination, video surveillance to minimize graffiti and illegal dumping and facility security. Other countries like Philadelphia, New York and San Francisco are planning to offer Muni Wi-Fi services in collaboration with private sector participants. In the first phase of the project, it will cover a three-square-mile area that includes downtown Riverside, Hunter Technology Park and an industrial estate called the Adams Auto Center. MetroFi designed enables low income residents to access the Internet and also provides advertising supported free service. AT&T will offer a high speed Internet access for for $7.99 a day and $15.99 for a weekly pass.
