Biometric security system for mobile communications

As the mobile applications are increasing, the security about their technology is also increasing, now biometric security is coming on mobile phones, PDAs and notebook computers.

Biometric security is the security, in which system verify person through his/her fingerprints or iris scanners. The IST project SecurePhone is taking a new approach by employing physical attributes of users digitally to sign audio, text, image files and provides proof of their origin and authenticity.

The mobile phones based on GSM, GPRS and UTMS mobile systems have a security system, but it lacks for user identification, text, and audio image files.

SecurePhone project partners are developing the system, which consists of two main parts that are following:

1) An authentication module: It uses biometric security applications to verify the user’s identity.

2) Digitally sign module: After verification, it signs the data using Public Key Infrastructure.

Firstly, the system is designed for PDA-phones, but it is also developing for smart phones and WiFi-enabled PDAs. The system has three ways for security:

a) Digital camera for image view and see facial expressions

b) Voice recognition software to detect any asynchrony between speech and lip movements

c) The handwritten signature of the user on the device’s touch screen

After verifying all three levels of security process users can use it. The most important thing there is no additional hardware for this system.
