BlackBerry makers Research In Motion Ltd.’s shares jumped about 2.5 percent on Thursday after it said it has been speaking to patent holding firm NTP Inc. through a court-appointed mediator. On NASDAQ RIM shares closed up $6.54 at $68.30 on volume of more than 21 million.
Earlier, NTP won a patent infringement verdict against RIM in 2002 and since then it is pursing an injunction to shut down the BlackBerry service in the US if RIM doesn’t go into a settlement with it. On this, RIM has already said it will implement software that works around the patents if the injunction is granted.
Also, RIM has announced an unexpectedly strong Q3 results. RIM results, revenue and profit forecasts that were released after markets closed on Wednesday pacified apprehensions and fears that its fight with NTP was causing major customer losses. This has buoyed investor sentiments towards RIM stocks that surged upwards so unexpectedly.
After a long time, there is something positive to write home about BlackBerry.
