Considering it a way to raise fund for the member countries, the European Union lawmakers are likely to impose tax on e-mails and mobile phone messages. Alain Lamassoure, a French MEP and member of the centre-right European People’s party has brought the tax proposal. The EU is now discussing on the issue.



As per the proposal, EU will fix 1.5 cents tax on text or SMS messages and a 0.00001 cent levy on e-mail sent.

At present, the EU budget is managed through a combination of import duties, VAT revenues and contribution from member states. Lamassoure says that imposing tax on SMS and e-mails is a way to raise fund as there are billions of mails and texts sent around the globe.
