This has been a long-standing concern for mobile users. Many had been calling for a white paper on the possible damage the radiation emitted during cell-phone usage cause. Now, Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, a Finnish radiation watchdog group has announced that they will be testing the effects of mobile radiation on the skin of human volunteers.
Ten volunteers have come ahead and they are all employees at the group. They will have small areas of their skin exposed to cell-phone radiation for the duration of a long call or about one hour. After that skin samples will be and compared with one before.
We must remember that some high-profile and very expensive lawsuits have alleged that excessive radiation from mobile phones cause cancer, namely brain tumors. This became a major issue when in November 2006, the US Supreme Court refused to throw out several class-action suits, which totaled several hundred million dollars, against Motorola, Nokia, Nextel Communications, Sprint and Cingular Wireless after lower courts had dismissed the lawsuits. The Supreme Court decision changed all that.
We can hope that the result of the tests would be conclusive and put an end to the speculation, either in favour of mobile phones or against it. If at all it is proved that the damage caused by the radiation during usage is indeed significant, we won’t give up using cellular phones altogether, but there would certainly be a way found to nullify the damage. This experiment would also cause many other such organizations to carry out their own tests especially in countries where foreign test results are not really recognized as valid.
