Nokia and Vodafone have launched a new website to help NGOs to brainstorm on how mobile technology can be used as a tool for social and environmental improvement. The website, www.shareideas.org, was created after NGOs asked for better tools that can provide them the knowledge on effective use of mobile services in their work.
The site will be created and run by people from diverse backgrounds - those who are interested in bringing about a social change using mobile technology. They will have the freedom to upload, edit or update case studies and other information from any part of the globe. These case studies will cover six important areas: education, health and safety, civic engagement, economic empowerment, environment, and humanitarian relief work.
The site, as of now, explains how an SMS alert system helped an organization in mobilizing hundreds of volunteers to carry out emergency clean up efforts in the event of an oil spill in the Baltic Sea. Other stories explained how games in mobiles helped improve AIDS/HIV awareness in Africa and India, and how teachers in remote places of Philippines receive training and latest learning materials through SMS services.
Ndidi Nwuneli, Founder and CEO of LEAP Africa, said:
The positive contribution mobile technology can make to societies is without doubt, but to realise its full potential we need to share our experiences and learnings more effectively. The partnership between Nokia and Vodafone has created something which is simple and practical to use, and will give us access to information which will help make a real difference to people’s lives.
The site also provides advice to NGOs on how they can use mobiles for improving the communication among their social-work volunteers.
