When we think about the converged device, say Smartphone, undoubtedly the name ‘Nokia’ comes first. Nokia has now emerged as the global leader in the smartphone market, sharing nearly half of the market share last year.

In its latest report, the research firm IDC has recognized Nokia as leading seller of Smartphones in 2006 sharing 48 percent of the total 80 million Smartphones shipment.

The Finland-based mobile giant sold nearly 38 million Smartphones last year despite lukewarm marketing in North America, which is said to be most conducive market for converged devices.

The report also proves that there is an overwhelming sale of converged devices in the global market during 2006. The shipment of converged devices has increased by 42 percent due to sharp decline in prices. As of now, some Smartphones are marketed for less than $200.

RIM occupied second place in the IDC report sharing 7.5 percent of the market. It has sold more than six million Smartphones last year, while Motorola is in the third position selling 4.9 million Smartphones.
