According to Mobile Industry Crime Action Forum, approximately 80 per cent of mobile phones would be locked within 48 hours of being reported stolen in five networks of UK. The forum is doing so to reduce mobile phone crime.
According to Police, it is more difficult than the past, because it is easy to re-activate illegally blocked phones in UK
According to Jack Wraith, chairman of MICAF, there are three ways to reduce crime of mobile phones.
Networks accountable: Now there is no accountability on networks where blocking mobile phones are concerned. Now majority of mobile phones would not be re-activated and therefore it would be useless, once it is blocked.
Harder to re-program: It would be difficult to re-program mobile phones illegally. According to Mobile Telephones Act 2002, the person who is doing re-progaming has to face 5 years in prison.
Ministerial pledge: According to him, if mobile industry leaders make less attractive mobile phones and demonstrate well about security to their customers, it would be quite helpful in reducing mobile crime.
