A Silicon Valley based Ooma Inc. is planning to shake telecommunications industry with the launch of $399 gizmo, which provides free, unlimited domestic phone calls for homes with broadband Internet services.
The company will also offer a free second line, conference calling, voice mail service and an online ‘lounge’ service, where users can change their preferences according to their choice or get voice mail in an e-mail format. Initially, the company will offer this service in US.
Ooma routes calls through the phone instead of using normal exchanges to terminate calls like Vonage. The service saves the termination fee on the call, and reduces the marginal cost. Even users can also call on 911 or any other phone to immediately terminate your call. The functionality of answering machine is based on the Hub and Scoot devices through physical buttons. Eevry Ooma account includes two lines, which can be accessed from any phone.
The company has placed about 250,000 calls among 43 employees, while 150 other beta testers will complete their test against Voice over Internet Protocol services from other companies like eBay Inc.’s Skype division, which has 220 million registered users.
