palm-symbol_48This might come as a surprise to the fellows who have seen Symbol Technologies and Palm as good friends in the past. Well, Symbol Technologies has officially announced to drop the Palm platform. The enterprise mobility company will withdraw its two Palm-III based handheld lines named Symbol SPT1550 and SPT1800. After the month of January, there won’t be any more shipments of the products. Symbol’s purchase to Motorola for US$3.9 billion in the month of September played a crucial role in this announcement. Symbol Technologies had already notified its resellers about its plans to drop Palm range. PalmSource hasn’t released a new version of the OS for the last three years.

But, Symbol hasn’t closed its doors forever for the Palm. Marco Landi, a Symbol spokesman said:

Windows Mobile is taking the dominant part of production, but I don’t think we’ve completely shut the door down on Palm. A lot of people like Palm, so that’s why I don’t think we’ve closed the door
