
The release of the ACCESS Linux platform (ALP) for the smartphone has been delayed by at least 6-months. Earlier ACCESS (PalmSource) had said that its platform will be ready by the end of 2006 but an entry in its FAQ’s now has pushed the date ahead and the customers will not be able to lay their hand son the ALP devices for one more year.
Recently Palm inked a $44 million worth of deal with ACCESS for continuous use of Palm OS Garnet which it uses for some of its Treo smartphones. This deal will let Palm use garnet for the future smartphones also.
There are also rumors that Palm is developing its own Linux based OS and it will force this Garnet license to enable its users to continue run Palm OS applications and ACCESS with its ALP GHost will also let the Palm OS applications to run on ALP-based devices and mobile phones.
The competitor of ACCESS a la mobile has announced the first customer for its Convergent Linux Platform. GUPP technologies have selected the OS of a la mobile for their upcoming smartphone which boasts of a QWERTY keypad.
