French-based Alcatel-Lucent has clubbed up with ANTEL, the incumbent telecom service provider in Uruguay to supply and install a 3G wireless network in that country. The wireless network is developed in the line with UMTS/HSPA (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service/ High Speed Packet Access) technology.
The joint deal brings first commercial 3G HSPA broadband wireless network in Uruguay. It will facilitate ANCEL, a wireless wing of ANTEL to offer a host number of services, including advanced multimedia, mobile broadband and converged services such as video call and streaming, mobile TV and high-speed mobile Internet access on 3G mobile phones.
ANCEL’S 3G network will cover more than 70% of Uruguayan territory and 97% of the population. It was the country’s leading cellco by the end of 2006, with more than 980,000 subscribers.
Marcelo Erlich, a division manager of ANCEL says,
With Alcatel-Lucent’s UMTS/HSPA network that ANCEL will deploy, we will be the first operator in Uruguay to offer broadband access to advanced mobile data services at a very high throughput.
