Speed is extremely important when you are online. No one wants to wait a whole day for a download. Some US networks are so slow that it almost takes forever to download. People who are think that US has the most advanced technology and higher internet speed are wrong. The US has fallen behind in network technology. Japan has taken the lead as always.
Currently the US download speed is 1.97 Mbps compared to the Japanese 61 Mbps. The 1.97 Mbps is the median speed of a current US network and it is extremely low. Recently, some guy in Sweden installed a 100Mbps fiber optics network in his neighborhood in Sweden.
Looking at the numbers, you might think that US is ahead. But no, if you look closely US is about 59.03 Mbps behind Japan. This is the hard cold truth. I was under the idea that US speeds are higher than any other country in the world. But, I guess I have been proved wrong.
A study conducted by the CWA proves this fact as well. The US broadband download speed is actually somewhere around 4.8 Mbps which is kind of sad. I think the reason is older and aging networks.
CWA President Larry Cohen agrees with this particular fact.
We have pathetic speeds compared to the rest of the world.People don’t pay attention to the fact that the country that started the commercial Internet is falling woefully behind.

Broadband speed is mostly attributed to the network capacity. The more network capacity you have, faster it is.
Some communities or societies think that broadband is necessary in order to create more jobs, and businesses. The CWA President - Cohen agrees:
In order to maintain our place in today’s global economy - and to create the jobs we need - our government must act
The FCC labels the network high speed only when the NT reaches a speed of 200 Kbps. The US is way off the well defined network speed. The issue of speed is so important that the FCC is thinking about redefining the term broadband.
In some countries like Japan, the Internet is still fairly sort of a new thing. So the networks are growing. However in US, the net has been around for a long time and the systems are aging. I think it’s time that the service providers think more on this issue.
