Steve Largent, Wireless Association President and CEO, wants that this holiday season the consumers recycle their used wireless devices, chargers and accessories.

He says;

I’m sure there were many new and innovative wireless products given out as gifts this holiday season. We want to remind everyone who may have received a new device to make sure and recycle the wireless products and accessories you will no longer be using. If you have a used wireless device, charger or accessory that you will no longer be using, just bring it to a carrier retail store and they will recycle it for you. It’s a very simple and consumer-friendly process and we encourage all wireless consumers to take full advantage of it.
All national wireless carrier plus many other regional carriers are participating in ‘Wireless...The New Recyclable‘ - the industry’s voluntary recycling initiative, as it is called.

We fully endorse what they are doing for recycling has many benefits.

Why?

It is easy and good for the environment. When used wireless phones are recycled, the component parts - such as plastics and precious metals - can be used in other products, from plastic milk jugs to circuitry.

So what happens to the material that you put in the recycling bin?

It is mailed to a carrier or manufacturer from where the product will is packaged and shipped to a facility for evaluation. Then, from there, it is:

a) Reused: If wireless devices and accessories are in good working condition, they are re-used by a number of worthy charities.

b) Refurbished: Wireless devices may be reconditioned or repaired. Companies often refurbish the products and return the devices to service.

c) Recycle/Recovered: When wireless devices reach their end-of-life, they are sent to processing facilities that recover and safely recycle reusable materials.
