India’s second largest private telephony major Reliance Communications (Rcomm) has made the cheapest phone for Indians. Rcomm has launched the SIM based Classic 202 at Rs 77 (US$19), which is almost half of the existing colour handset prices of Rs 1,600. The company has launched ‘Classic 202′ along with ‘Classic 204′ and `Classic 203′, which are available at Rs 844 and Rs 888, respectively. The ‘Classic 202′ is featured with FM radio, ployphonic ringtones and address book. Rcomm has launched new SIM based CDMA handsets, which allows users to change to other providers, if they are not satisfied with the Reliance Communications’ services. Currently, the entry level black and white handsets are available at around Rs 1000 and color handsets at Rs 1400-1800 from Tata Indicom, the other significant CDMA mobile service provider. According to Reliance Communications President (wireless) S P Shukla, Rcomm is bringing mobile phones for an entirely new segment of population in metroes, small cities and rural hinterland of India. This will give opportunity to customers to buy new handset instead of buying second-hand phones. Via: Businesses Standard
