Sun Microsystems is planning to sell ‘pre-integrated’, GPL-licensable, Linux and Java based operating system software reference design for mobile phones. The company is planning to sell version of Java based mobile phones, named “JavaFX Mobile” which will bring network access to the world’s computers. Like most Java enabled phones, JavaFX Mobile will also use Java for almost everything, whereas the Linux component will consist only of a kernal and low-level services and libraries. JavaFX Mobile uses Java from the UI toolkit to telephony and security middleware to user applications like browser and media players. After the acquisition of SavaJe by Sun, SavaJe will develop the Java applications for JavaFX Mobile phone. Company’s pure-Java mobile phone operating system stack would be integrated into JavaFX Mobile. JavaFX Mobile would be available through OEM license to carriers and electronics manufacturers. The JavaFX software can also run the host of Java applications, which have been written for the predominating incarnation of Java for mobile phones, named Mobile Internet Device Platform (MIDP). MIDP is based on the more compact Java Micro Edition (ME). The company has also launched JavaFX Script, a scripting language to simplify the process of creating and distributing interactive content, which spans all Java technology enabled platforms like mobile phones, set tops, and laptops. Both JavaFX products would be available under the GNU and GPL. Jonathan Schwartz, Chief Executive of Sun said, Java will play a central role in bringing the Internet to the planet.
