AMD’s chips to turn your mobile phone into TV

Now, you can turn your mobile phone into TV. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has unveiled the mobile graphics technology for mobile phones at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. AMD has launched Imageon 2298, 2294 and 2192 processors, which are designed with a number of media-rich features and also includes processing of images up to 12 Mp, image stabilization, multi-channel audio playback. The company would be giving has given license to other chip manufacturers, including STMicroelectronics to offer this service in mobile phones. The media process is separate from the phone’s core processor, which allows manufacturers to introduce new multimedia functions more quickly. The separate architecture of processor will reduce power consumption and gives longer device battery life. Additionally, chip will also support audio and video encoding and decoding, acoustic echo cancellation and video stabilisation. The TV output function of processor allows users to view videos and photos on any TV or projector. According to AMD product manager Philippe Decotignie, the new media chip will support full DVD resolution and users can turn their mobile phones into mobile TVs with very high and fast resolution.


 
 
 

Verizons launches mobile television service in US

Now Verizon subscribers in US can watch television on their mobile phones. The second largest US mobile phone provider, Verizon Wireless announced that the company has launched the first commercial mobile television service in 20 states of US with full-length programmes and high quality picture. The joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group Plc. will provide the television service on mobile phones, while Qualcomm Inc. unit MediaFlo has developed the service, which includes eight channels broadcasting full-length TV shows to mobile phones on 24 hours a day. The picture of the mobile TV would be better than Verizon Wireless’s existing Vcast video service. The company will charge $15 a month for the service. Firstly, the mobile video services launched in 2004 in US with 7 million customers, which is increased upto 232 million customers. According to Ovum analyst Roger Entner, it is expected that MediaFlo users could increase to 20 million to 30 million people within about seven years.
