A leading provider of wireless and security solutions to business enterprise, Ascom is planning to release its IP-DECT communication platform in North America. The IP-DECT system not only combines the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) standard but it also operates in the Unlicensed-PCS spectrum with emerging VoIP technologies. It capitalizes both packet data as well high-quality wireless voice on a single network. The solution consists of three DECT 6.0 portable handsets and IP-DECT base stations, which is capable of transmitting and receiving voice packets through wirelessly. These voice packets can be directly registered to an IP-PBX or to a TDM-PBX using the Ascom VoIP Gateway. The mobile phone user uses the DECT standard to handle VoIP calls through wirelessly in their office location or in any other location. The company is also planning to supply its Transport Management System (TMS) to the Russian company Mitrapoint. According to Chad West, president of Ascom (US) Inc., the IP-DECT offers interference-free wireless VoIP solution to customers, which is easy to install and maintain.


 
 
 

Finally, Nortel has introduced the full IEEE 802.11 based QoS standards to its wireless LAN software. The Nortel has updated its wireless LAN software and also introduced mobile phone, named 6100, which will offer more wireless VoIP services for the enterprise. Nortel’s WLAN switches and access points the full IEEE 802.11-based QoS standards are needed to ensure high quality VoIP calls over a WLAN infrastructure. The company has added two remaining 802.11e elements to its infrastructure, so that any 802.11e-enabled client can make VoIP calls, including PDAs and laptop. Nortel’s new element has a power saving feature, which will make VoIP handset inactive and conserves the battery power. It has also call admission control feature, which will enable an access point to monitor and manage VoIP calls to optimize as other clients come and go on that same access point. The company has also introduced the first wireless VoIP phone, 6100 with radio capability, which will support 802.11b, 11g or 11a connections. This new handset will also support Wi-Fi Multimedia prioritization. Nortel’s WLAN handset will have a feature like ‘push-to-talk’, which will phone to act like walkie-talkie with an extended battery option.
