California, based company, Gefen Inc has unveiled a wireless USB 2.0 based on Icron’s ExtremeUSB technology. The developers of ExtremeUSB, Icron Technologies Corporation announced that Gefen has launched new wireless USB based on Icron’s ExtremeUSB technology. The company has already displayed at InfoComm 07 show in Anaheim from June 19 to 21, 2007. Gefen’s new USB supports the hi-speed USB 2.0 and devices up to 100 feet from the computer. The new wireless USB will work on the Apple (OSX) as well as Windows and Linux based PCs by using Icron Technologies’ ExtremeUSB based on 802.11g technology. The receiver is a four port USB hub, which supports multiple devices by adding additional hubs. Gefen’s plug and play wireless USB 2.0 extender requires no upgrades, software installation and user configuration. It is compatible with all USB devices working on all operating systems. It has optimized circuits, which delivers the data at high speed. Hagai Gefen, president and CEO, said, We believe this reliable and wireless method of USB extension will significantly enhance the way systems operate well into the future. “Subsequent versions will also support multiple receiver hubs connected to one sender unit, allowing a same time distribution that delivers data real-time with no cables. Like most of Gefen’s extender solutions, the wireless USB 2.0 extender uses small sender and receiver units connected to the computer and to the extended USB devices. No cables are needed to link sender to the receiver, which allows connection to cameras, keyboards, printers, hard drives or any USB 2.0 devices at distances up to 100 feet away.

USB-IF group certifies Wireless USB certification to CE products
The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) stated that finally, Wireless USB (WUSB) products are going to hit the markets in the coming months. The first waves of consumer electronics devices have officially certified the Dell Inspiron 1720, D-Link DUB-1210 Wireless USB adapter, D-Link DUB-2240 4-port Wireless USB hub, IOGEAR Wireless USB Hub/Adapter and the Lenovo T61/T61p under its wireless USB (WUSM) 1.0 Certification Program. It means that the WUSB products will join with other nascent short range wireless technologies like ultra wideband (UWB) and the wireless high-definition interface (WHDI). The new WUSB peripherals consists variety of hubs and dingles, so that consumers can connect to an existing USB port. These certified products would be interoperable and fully compatible with upcoming certified WUSB gear. Users can plug these dongles into a USB port, so that they can easily communicate through wirelessly with a dedicated USB hub across the room. Then users can plug USB devices into that hub and then show up on their computer, as they are directly plugged into it. According to USB-IF president, Jeff Ravencraft, with a variety of certified wireless USB silicon and end-user products are available, the group is expecting to see other OEMs and ODMs follow suit in the coming months as Wireless USB continues to broad adoption. The certified products are featured with a “Certified Wireless USB” logo on the product packaging. Wireless USB 1.0 provides data rate of up 480Mb/sec at a distance of three meters.
